The ten-page spread chronicles the renovation of the former worker’s cottage, which dates back to 1868. Homeowner Jennifer Abshire bought the downtown pied-a-terre to serve as a retreat and provide rental income. However, the historic cottage was need of a major makeover and the PR firm CEO turned to local design guru, Ruel Joyner of 24e, to oversee the challenging renovation of the 700 square foot cottage.

“It was important to me to preserve as much of the history of the cottage while making the most of the space,” said Abshire. “I knew I was in expert hands with Ruel. He was able to meld my vision with his creative artistry and deliver beyond my expectations.” 

According to Refresh magazine, Joyner employed principles of ship design -- economy of space and supreme functionality -- to rework the interior. “Because it’s a rental, we used materials that hold up to traffic,” said Joyner. “We wanted to translate Jennifer’s personality here. We tried to make it young, fresh, and feminine, but still solid.”

The article also includes Joyner’s five rental decorating lessons that make any space more inviting, as well as tips on how to infuse the charm and romantic ambiance of historic Savannah that travelers find so enticing when visiting the city.
