Armstrong to Celebrate Women’s Empowerment Month With Lectures, Presentations

Armstrong State University’s Office of Multicultural Affairs and Gender Studies program is pleased to announce the schedule for the annual Women’s Empowerment Month celebration, featuring a series of lectures, panel discussions, presentations and special events throughout March.
Unless otherwise noted, all events take place on the Armstrong campus, located at 11935 Abercorn St., and are free and open to the public. A complete calendar of events is available online at Armstrong.edu/women.

Tuesday, March 3, 1-2 p.m.
Reclaiming Beautiful
Student Union Ogeechee Theater
The Armstrong Student Recreation Center will give a presentation on the social construction of beauty with the goal of changing the standard idea of what makes a woman beautiful through discussion that emphasizes health and wellness and beauty that comes from inner confidence.

Brown Bag Lunch Series: “Argentina, Brazil, and Chile: The Promotion of Women’s Empowerment at the Ballot Box and Through Revolution”
Gamble Hall 200
Dr. Jose de Arimateia da Cruz of the Department of Criminal Justice, Social, and Political Sciences will give a lunchtime lecture on women’s civic engagement in three Latin nations.

Women in the Arts Symposium: “Home, A Woman’s Place?”

This thought-provoking symposium will focus on women’s impact and legacy within the arts.

“Cross Dressing and the Gender Spectrum”
Hawes Hall 204
Rhonda Lee, outreach director for Sigma Epsilon, a non-profit support organization for cross-dressers and their partners, will discuss issues of gender and its implications within the cross-dressing community.

“Black Feminist Thought: Historical Foundations and Contemporary Applications”

Dr. Jennifer Wyse from the Department of Criminal Justice, Social, and Political Science will give a lunchtime lecture on black feminist ideology.

“Women in Mathematics: Celebrating accomplishments since 360 A.D. and an honest look at the reasons for persistent under-representation”

Dr. Sabrina Hessinger from the Department of Mathematics will give a lunchtime lecture recounting the historical accomplishments of female mathematicians.

Student Success Coordinator and Academic Advisor Grace Fleming will be joined by Armstrong student August Pritchett for a lunchtime lecture regarding women’s empowerment.

Film Screening “Tough Guise 3”
Student Union Ogeechee Theater
Armstrong’s Gender Studies Program will host a special screening of “Tough Guise 3,” a film exploring themes of male aggression and violence as means to obtaining power.
