Deputy Commissioner Highlights Port of Savannah Transportation Implications

The Georgia Department of Transportation's Deputy Commissioner Todd Long was the keynote speaker for the 2015 Engineers Luncheon held at Mercer University Thursday, Feb. 26. Long highlighted Georgia's transportation infrastructure needs created by the future Port of Savannah expansion.

The Georgia DOT partnered with the Georgia Ports Authority in the entity's aggressive pursuit to deepen the Savannah River to more efficiently serve the growing world trade demands. Federal and state regulatory approvals were met in 2013 allowing the initiative's move toward construction. The Department wants to be ready when the port's transformation is complete.

Capital projects supporting the Georgia Statewide Freight & Logistics Action Plan that would increase capacity are identified and would cost the state well over $10 billion. Finding ways to bulk up Georgia's transportation system is a high priority considering increased demand.
