Senior Citizens, Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for area seniors, is pleased to announce that Roger Smith, director of The Learning Center of SCI, was recently named president of the Savannah Council on World Affairs, a nonprofit organization fostering community awareness and study of international issues.
In his new position, Smith will lead the SCWA board of directors, of which he has been a member since 2000, in the execution of its mission and programs, including its popular international affairs speaker series. The series, which runs September through May, features an open-forum discussion and lecture with current and former government officials, diplomats, educators, journalists, and members of non-governmental organizations from both the U.S. and around the world.
At SCI, Smith works to develop and administer learning opportunities in the humanities for people ages 55 and older, including a selection of courses, lectures, and special discussion groups in four sessions per year. Prior to joining SCI, he served as a teacher of American literature and French studies, a museum educator at the Massie Heritage Center, and director of education at the Georgia Historical Society.
In addition to the SCWA Board, Smith has served since 2013 on Armstrong State University’s Alumni Association Board. His education includes a bachelor’s degree in English and French from Armstrong State University, where he was awarded a 2013 Notable Alumni award.
