Karla-Sue Marriott, Ph.D., will represent Savannah State University as a Governor’s Teaching Fellow. The associate professor of chemistry and forensic science coordinator will teach for two weeks at the University of Georgia in Athens this summer.

The program is designed for faculty members who teach at accredited public or private colleges or universities, other than UGA, in the state of Georgia. Participants are selected on the basis of their teaching experience, their interest in continuing instructional and professional development and their ability to make a positive impact on their own campus.

Marriott’s focus will be on the cross-collaboration of art and science and how she has brought it to the campus of SSU. The forensic science program uses a state-of-the-art mock crime scene facility, equipped with surveillance cameras and microphones. A forensic photography darkroom was also constructed for interdisciplinary collaboration with the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.

“My current efforts as a teacher, scholar and artist are directed towards the unification of art and science to nurture the creative mind, enhance investigative learning and improve faculty collaborations across disciplines,” Marriott says. “As the coordinator of the forensic science program, my emphasis is on making science relevant and engaging.”
