Senior Citizens, Inc., a local nonprofit agency dedicated to helping people age successfully, will host its 5th annual Miles for Meals 5k Run/Walk at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 20, 2015 at Daffin Park. One hundred percent of the proceeds will benefit SCI’s Meals on Wheels program, which provides a hot, nutritious meal to seniors throughout coastal Georgia.

Run, walk, or race with “celebrity” veggies for a morning filled with fun and fitness for the entire family and leave knowing you have made a difference in the lives of seniors in your community. Participants are encouraged to wear vegetable, fruit, or other food-related costumes or hat.

The 5k Run/Walk begins at Daffin Park East Mall and passes through Police Memorial Trail before ending in front of Grayson Stadium. Food, drinks, and awards will be given out after the race.

Fleet Feet is sponsoring “Shop for Meals on Wheels” from 10:00am to 6:00pm, donating $5.00 to the program for each pair of shoes or piece of apparel purchased.

Through its Meals on Wheels program, SCI delivers more than 1,500 hot meals each day to older adults throughout coastal Georgia, while at the same time offering them a friendly midday visit.

In many cases, these seniors are homebound and this one daily meal is their only source of sustenance. It takes just $6 a day to provide a hot, nutritious meal to a homebound senior, yet more than 600 seniors, at or below the federal poverty line, await nutrition support in Chatham County alone! Georgia ranks number six among Meals on Wheels America's “Top Ten Hunger States,” with nearly one in twelve seniors in Georgia being at risk of hunger.
