Richmond Hill, Ga., a thriving coastal city about 20 miles south of Savannah, is pleased to announce its designation as a 2015 Playful City USA honoree by KaBOOM! for its initiatives in creating a community that allows children to get balanced and active play in a safe environment. 

“We are honored to be named a Playful City by KaBOOM! again for 2015. Richmond Hill has worked hard to be a playful city and a great place for everyone to live,” said Mayor Harold Fowler. “We are committed to serving our citizens and offering a better quality of life in Richmond Hill.”

Hopscotch sidewalks, structured recess programs, mandated neighborhood play spaces, city-wide play days and mobile recreation vehicles are all ways in which the 2015 playful communities are appealing to, attracting and retaining residents. Last fall, the City of Richmond Hill began construction on a sidewalk project, a system of sidewalks connecting neighborhoods to schools, parks and retail establishments, to improve aesthetics and walkability of neighborhoods.  

“Playability is crucial to the success of our future communities, and we are proud of the work these cities and leaders are doing to provide a better quality of life for all residents, and especially families,” says James Siegal, KaBOOM! president. “Play provides a competitive advantage for cities looking to attract and retain residents. With these esteemed leaders, and our friends and partners across the country, we continue to prioritize play for all kids.”

This is the sixth time that Richmond Hill has been recognized as a Playful City, which has allowed the city to apply for and receive grants that help improve the conditions of area parks to make them safer and more enjoyable for children and families. The City holds a yearly Play Day during one of the many festivals in J.F. Gregory Park to encourage children and those in the community to get out and stay active.
