Last Fall the Society of Colonial Wars presented a portrait of George Washington to David Tribble, president of Bethesda Academy, as part of the "Help Return George Washington to America's Schools” program. The portrait is on display at Bethesda in a location where students are able to see it every day.
In addition, Nan Marshall, author of What Would George Do? Advice from Our Founding Father, presented copies of her book to each member of Bethesda Academy’s graduating class of 2015. Marshall was recently awarded the Sims Bray Award by the Society’s Atlanta Chapter for her book on American Studies at the organization’s spring assembly.
“Bethesda Academy's mission to instill in its students ‘a love of God, Country, Learning and a strong work ethic’ are the same timeless values embraced by George Washington,” said Marshall.
Released by Pelican Publishing, Marshall's book, What Would George Do?, takes George Washington's code of personal conduct and uses it as the framework to build engaging, entertaining discourse on the proper behavior in a spectrum of modern social situations, including congenial communication, appropriate dress, table manners and even sporting events. According to Marshall, Washington’s times were fraught with turmoil and his code of conduct offers us a strong example for better living today.
