Telfair Museums is pleased to present the ambitious exhibition, Come As You Are: Art of the 1990s, June 12 - September 20, 2015 at the Jepson Center for the Arts. This unique exhibition, titled after the 1992 song by quintessential 90s grunge band Nirvana, showcases 65 works from paintings, drawings, sculptures, and installations to photographs, prints, videos, and digital art.

Come As You Are is a groundbreaking show that marks the first attempt to celebrate and historicize art made in the United States during the 1990s. While the 1990s are somewhat considered the recent past, the exhibition brings to light the continuing relevance of its themes and highlights the ways in which art of the 90s paved the way for art today.

“The 90s were a period of great social change and transformation,” said Erin Dunn, Telfair Museums’ Middleton Curatorial Fellow. “The artwork really tapped into everything going on at the time, and art today continues to expand upon those same issues.”

The dynamic exhibition explores the history of the 90s through the perspectives of 45 different artists born or working in the United States between the years of 1989 and 2001 -- from the fall of the Berlin Wall to 9/11. While humorous, quirky, and sure to evoke 90s nostalgia, the works also capture the tensions and alternative culture of this pivotal decade. Covering a range of social issues and geopolitical milestones, the show centers around three principal themes: multiculturalism and the “identity politics” debates, the digital revolution, and globalization.

Come As You Are is organized by the Montclair Art Museum’s Alexandra Schwartz, Curator of Contemporary Art, with Kimberly Siino, Curatorial Assistant.
