Mike Abrashoff’s most challenging new job came with an underachieving staff known for its low morale, high accident rates and abysmal performance evaluations. He needed to turn things around but had no power to hire or fire and no money for raises or bonuses.
At the age of 36, Abrashoff had been given command of the USS Benfold, a guided missile destroyer considered the worst-performing ship in the U.S. Navy’s Pacific fleet.
