Senior Citizens, Inc. (SCI) was recently chosen as one of the recipients of the Georgia Humanities CARES Act Emergency Operating Grants. Of the $634,200 donated by Georgia Humanities, $5,000 was awarded to Senior Citizens, Inc. to help with programming costs for The Learning Center (TLC).
“We are so grateful to Georgia Humanities for this timely grant,” said Patti Lyons, president, SCI. “Because of COVID-19, we are offering our courses online for the first time ever, and this grant will specifically help us with filming costs.”
Currently in its 13th year, The Learning Center provides intellectually engaging, humanities-based educational programs through classes, discussion groups, conversation circles, and skill-building courses. Classes range from one-hour lectures to nine-week courses on a variety of topics.
In addition to Senior Citizens, Inc., the CARES Act Emergency Operating Grants helped 76 other museums, libraries, historical societies, colleges and universities, and additional organizations that offer humanities programming to Georgians. The grants were awarded based on the applicant organization’s humanities programming mission, demonstrated need, and annual operating budget.
“Georgia’s humanities organizations play important roles in our state. Georgia Humanities is distributing 100% of the funds that were entrusted to us by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the U.S. Congress to assist with this vital work during this challenging time of change,” said Laura McCarty, president Georgia Humanities.
