Emmaus House Soup Kitchen Receives Donation from Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation

Emmaus House soup kitchen has received $2,500 from the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation just in time to help feed local residents. Emmaus House will use the gift to provide hearty meals and basic needs services to the homeless and near homeless in the downtown area.
“We are grateful for the continued support from Food Lion Feeds, especially during these stressful and uncertain times,” said Executive Director Ariana Berksteiner.
Located in downtown Savannah Georgia, Emmaus House serves hot plates of food each weekday morning to homeless or otherwise needy individuals. The word ‘breakfast’ is used very lightly, as Executive Chef Brandi calls the meal a “time of day rather than a type of food”. Many clients may only see one hot meal a day, so the chef makes sure that each person who sets foot in the door is very well fed. Concerns surrounding the Covid19 pandemic caused Emmaus House to close their doors for over a month in order to protect clients, staff and volunteers who may be immunocompromised. In May, Emmaus House opened once again, providing to-go style meals for anyone in need. Clients come primarily from the very many tent communities spread around the city, as well as those sleeping on the street. Emmaus House provides a space where individuals experiencing homelessness and hunger can find respite. For more information about Emmaus House visit www.unitedministriessavannah.org
Established in 2001, the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation provides financial support for programs and organizations dedicated to feeding the hungry in the communities it serves. Since its inception, the foundation has awarded more than $12 million in grants.
