Union Mission to Receive a $6,500 Donation from Kiwanis Club of Skidaway Island

Union Mission will receive a generous $6,500 donation from Kiwanis Club of Skidaway Island during a special Awards Ceremony on Thursday, September 17th starting at 8:00am at the Palmetto Club at the Landings. The ceremony is intended to recognize select nonprofits that plan to implement successful, high impact programs that serve local at-risk children in our community.
This donation will help fund a new computer learning center at Union Mission’s Dutchtown Campus Apartments, a 48-unit family apartment complex that houses formerly homeless individuals with either a mental or physical disability, with 5 computer workstations for 25 at-risk children. Currently, there is not a space that accommodates a virtual learning environment for the ninety percent (90%) of the youth that are in elementary or middle school. This highly effective computer learning center will address the critical needs which might otherwise remain unmet.
“Union Mission’s goal is to address the needs of at-risk-children that lack a virtual learning solution when others have such tools available,” said Union Mission Executive Director, Patricia Youngquist. “An on-site computer learning center in the absence of traditional classroom learning is essential to having a student’s education continue to grow, especially in a COVID-19 time.”
Union Mission’s vision for the future includes expanding service capabilities of the organization to meet the challenges of client and community needs. The new computer learning center capacity accommodates up to 10 workstations, however, due to social distancing, Union Mission will implement only 5 workstations as part of Phase 1. A possible Phase 2 in 2021, would include the additional 5 workstations for Union Mission clients.
