The Veterans Council of Chatham County will host an induction ceremony of 1st Lt. Eual Akin into the 10th Mountain Legends Hall of Fame. The prestigious award will take place at the monthly veterans meeting held on Monday, February 1st at 6pm at the American Legion Post 184 located at 3003 Rowland Avenue. 

“Due to Covid-19 the official ceremony was not able to be held in New York last year. Akin’s son-in-law, retired Coast Guard Commander Gerald Fleming, reached out to the Veterans Council to host an award presentation, states Chairman Joe Higgins. “To be able to present such a priceless award to a 100 year old 10th Mountain Warrior Legend is an honor for the Veterans Council of Chatham County.

Joining the 10th Mountain Division in Italy in 1945 and assigned to D Company, 87th Infantry Regiment, then Pfc. Akins fought at Riva Ridge and Mt. Belvedere. After being honorably discharged, Akins joined the 230th Artillery Battalion of the Georgia National Guard and received commission as a 2nd Lieutenant. 1st Lt. Akins was awarded the Bronze Star with oak leaf cluster for ground combat against an armed enemy.

Special guests include Hunter Airfield Garrison Commander LTC. Steve Bolton, Congressman Buddy Carter, Savannah Harbor Foundation David Moses, OPFOB J.R. Brown and CONNECT Savannah’s Noelle Wiehe and Erica Baskin.
