The Downtown Garden Club of Savannah will hold a dedication ceremony for five trees recently planted. The community and public are welcomed to attend the ceremony on July 6th, 2021 at 9 a.m. at the intersection of Liberty and Drayton Streets.

Started in 1969, the Downtown Garden Club of Savannah, DGC, is a group of neighbors in Savannah's Landmark Historic District who share a passion for gardening and community service. 

Through their partnership with Savannah Tree Foundation, the DGC were able to plant five trees downtown after hosting their fundraiser event “Arboreatum.” The fundraiser was held in February of 2020, but due to COVID the planting and dedication were postponed. 

“This particular area of Drayton was a concrete jungle and we are hoping to jumpstart interest in replacing the tree canopy to areas Downtown that are barren,” Kathryn Murph, member of DGC, said.

The fundraiser was a lunch and learn held at the Bull and Park American Legion, featuring guest speakers Gene Phillips of Gene’s Nursery and Leslie Geer of Leslie Geer Designs. 

Donors for the planting of the trees included: Treylor Park and Hitch; Savage, Turner, Pinckney and Savage; Colony Bank; Savoy Society; Crystal Nails; The Parker Companies.

Special guests who will be in attendance of the dedication ceremony will be Mary McAlister, past president of DGC; Heide Reed, current president of DGC; Nina Altschiller and Kathryn A. Murph, Arboretum chairs; and Alderman Nick Palumbo
