Savage & Turner Attorney Wins $3 Million Verdict for Military ENT Surgeon Injured in Bicycle Crash on Islands Highway

Savage, Turner, Pinckney & Savage attorney Zachary R. Sprouse recently secured a $3,000,000 jury verdict for client Major Sally Stasio, M.D.

The Savannah-based trial team secured the $3 million verdict in the State Court of Liberty County on August 10th, 2021. The case was tried over three days, including jury selection. Sprouse tried the case with attorney Lloyd Murray of Richmond Hill. The jury returned its verdict in favor of the Plaintiff after approximately two hours of deliberation.

“This is a meaningful win for our client,” said Sprouse, who served as lead trial counsel for the injured 37-year-old Military ENT surgeon. "We’re thankful the jury maintained an open mind throughout the case and spoke the truth with their verdict,” Sprouse added.

This case involved a brutal vehicle-on-bicyclist crash and the serious injuries the Plaintiff sustained on November 19, 2016. While riding her bicycle on Islands Highway in Midway, Georgia, she was struck head-on by a Lexus attempting to pass a slower moving car. The Lexus was driven by Mr. James R. Morris. From causes unrelated to the crash Mr. Morris passed away about one month later at the age of 85.

The Plaintiff shattered her left scapula, sustained a severe fracture to her left tibia. However, past medical bills only amounted to around $30,000.

On August 11th, 2021, Liberty County State Court Judge Jeffery N. Osteen entered the Judgment against the Defendant. According to the Court’s Judgment, damages are awarded to the Plaintiff in the amount of $3,000,000.00. The Defendant is also ordered to pay court costs.

Sprouse has high praise for defense counsel. “The defense was very well represented by an experienced trial lawyer – maybe one of the most gifted civil defense lawyers in the area.”

This is Sprouse’s third consecutive multi-million-dollar jury verdict in the last two years. In August 2019, Sprouse and Brent Savage, Jr. won a $4.25 million verdict in McIntosh County on behalf of an injured worker who sustained a catastrophic injury during a tree felling job. Eight weeks later the same trial team won a $3 million verdict in Henry County on behalf of an injured truck driver.
