A Message from the CEO
Preserving and presenting the history of the Eighth Air Force is the mission of the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force. This is a unique mission, as the museum is the sole museum organization focused on collecting the material history of our nation’s most storied air force.
The Mighty Eighth Museum has developed over the past quarter century the most comprehensive permanent collection of World War II-era Eighth Air Force objects and items. The result of collecting is the preservation of history; thus making collecting the museum’s most important responsibility. Guided by a collections management policy, this active process creates a dynamic permanent collection.
In 2021, the Mighty Eighth Museum’s Collections and Research Department accepted and accessioned 130 collections. The department also cataloged 6,237 items. These materials add layer upon layer to Eighth Air Force history, furnish perspective and provide museum staff with materials for education programs and exhibits. If you are wondering what to do with that collection, please contact the museum. Together, we can ensure that Eighth Air Force material history is preserved for the benefit of future generations.
