AIA Savannah & NAWIC #380 to Host Member-Only Job-Site Tour Of First Cross-Laminated Timber Buildings To Be Constructed in Southeast Georgia
Thursday, July 28th, 2022
On August 4th, 2022 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., members from AIA Savannah and NAWIC #380 will have a private tour of the first cross-laminated timber buildings to be constructed in Southeast Georgia, located at 110 & 111 Ann Streett.
“Steps away from Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in Downtown Savannah, 110 and 111 Ann Street are Choate’s inaugural cross-laminated timber (CLT) projects and among the premier CLT structures to be built in southeast Georgia. Together, these multi-family projects bring premium amenities, two levels of below-grade parking, and nearly 400 luxury apartment units to the coastal city.” - Choate Construction
Ann Street’s CLT panels consist of layered lumber boards stacked in alternating directions to increase tensile and compressive strength. The layers are glued together and pressed to form a solid, rectangular panel that is used as a load-bearing element in structural systems. Since all of the panels, including window and door openings, are prefabricated in Binderholz’s facility in Austria, the project team coordinated an intricate logistics plan at the start of the process to set the stage for a quick and easy onsite assembly that generates almost no waste.
Because of its strength and inherent fire resistance, mass timber/CLT offers an alternative to fossil fuel-intensive materials for many applications—including high-rises—and an opportunity to reduce the carbon footprint of the built environment.
The project team is led by architecture firm LS3P Associates Ltd., structural engineering firm Tharpe Engineering Group and developer Flank, Inc. - all who have prior Mass Timber expertise throughout the East Coast.
PROPER PPE REQUIRED FOR JOB-SITE TOUR: hard-soled shoes - no sneakers or heeled boots, hard hat, safety vest, and safety glasses. No cropped pants. Must provide your own gear.
