Savannah Sees Rise in August Unemployment Rate

Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said Thursday that Savannah recorded an unemployment rate of 2.9 percent in August, up two-tenths of a percent over the month. A year ago, the rate was 3.8 percent.
“As we look toward the fall, we are committed to supporting the workforce as employers search for seasonal, full-time, and part-time employees to fill vacancies in preparation for the holiday employment season,” said Commissioner Mark Butler.
The labor force decreased in Savannah by 323 and ended the month with 199,955. That number increased by 2,559 when compared to August of 2021.
Savannah finished the month with 194,101 employed residents. That number decreased by 758 over the month and rose 4,303 when compared to the same time a year ago.
Savannah ended August with 201,000 jobs, an all-time high. That number increased by 1,200 from July to August and went up by 8,100 when compared to this time last year.
The number of unemployment claims went down by 2 percent in Savannah in August. When compared to last August, claims were down by about 51 percent.
Employ Georgia, the GDOL’s online job listing service at employgeorgia.com showed about 7,623 active job postings in Savannah for August.
