Savannah Sees Drop in September Unemployment Rate

Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said Thursday that Savannah recorded an unemployment rate of 2.5 percent in September, down four-tenths of a percent over the month. A year ago, the rate was 3.3 percent.

"We continue to see a steady rise in job creation and demand by employers to fill open positions,” said Commissioner Mark Butler. “This strong growth has led to Georgia having the fewest unemployed residents in over 20 years."

The labor force decreased in Savannah by 269 and ended the month with 198,973. That number increased by 1,881 when compared to September of 2021.

Savannah finished the month with 194,034 employed residents. That number increased by 633 over the month and rose 3,464 when compared to the same time a year ago.

Savannah ended September with 199,500 jobs. That number decreased by 700 from August to September and went up by 8,400 when compared to this time last year.

The number of unemployment claims went down by 15 percent in Savannah in September. When compared to last September, claims were down by about 24 percent.

Employ Georgia, the GDOL’s online job listing service at employgeorgia.com showed about 7,633 active job postings in Savannah for September.
