Forsyth Farmers’ Market (FFM) will host its annual Farm Picnic from 4-7 pm Sunday, April 23 at the Old Dairy Farm, 2500 Tennessee Ave. The public is invited to bring chairs, blankets, and savor a dazzling array of dishes from area farm-to-table chefs.

The Farm Picnic is FFM’s largest fundraiser. Each year one afternoon of food, live music, a silent auction, and springtime fun translates into dollars that go to work in Savannah neighborhoods where access to fresh produce is scarce.

“The market’s mission is to promote participation in a local food system that supports sustainable production and increases access to local products,” said Deidre Grim, FFM’s Executive Director. “Simply put, donors help us support farmers to improve food access in our community.”

This year Forsyth Farmers’ Market was fortunate to have extremely generous sponsors, including: Critz Autogroup; Left Lane Hospitality: Mansion on Forsyth Park; The De Soto Hotel, Savannah; Guerry Lumber; Daniel Reed Hospitality; and Team Callahan at Keller Williams Realty.

As many as 5,000 people shop at the Saturday market each week. Among them on average about 100 people whose food dollars go twice as far through the SNAP (formerly food stamp) program, which has been especially valuable “We are the highest SNAP redeeming farmers’ market in Georgia,” Dr. Grim said.
FFM’s mobile market, Farm Truck 912, buys produce from farmers and takes it into low-income/low-access neighborhoods. And 912 Food Farmacy, our produce prescription program, partners with four local clinics to register low-income patients who have or are at risk of developing diet-related chronic disease. FFM provides complementary nutrition education through the community.

“These programs make us one of the most visible and effective organizations in the state supporting farmers and improving food access. However, these programs take lots of staffing and resources. The farm picnic proceeds will have an immediate impact by helping local farmers and improve food access to our community,” Dr. Deidre Grim said.
