Live Oak Public Libraries and Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary have partnered to host the special exhibit: History of Gray’s Reef.

Located in the Atlantic Ocean, 19 miles off of the coast of Sapelo Island, Georgia, Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary is an ocean park teeming with diverse and abundant marine life. Scientists have identified more than 200 species of fish and 900 species of invertebrates that use the reef’s scattered rocky outcroppings and ledges. Gray's Reef is a catalyst for scientific research studying water quality, ocean noise, hurricane predictions, and climate change.

The display features segments of the Gray’s Reef Wave Wall highlighting the history and habitat of the sanctuary. The curves of the walls mimic those of ocean waves and visitors are able to walk around the display, learning more about the natural history of Gray’s Reef.

The Wave Wall was constructed by students and instructors at Savannah Technical College to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the sanctuary’s designation in 2021 (original designation in 1981).

“We are excited to present this dynamic exhibit, raising awareness about our coastal environment and bringing the experience of Gray’s Reef to the community,” said Lola Shelton-Council, Executive Director of Live Oak Public Libraries. “Since the reef is located out in the Atlantic, the Wave Wall is an excellent way to explore the wonders of the ocean – on land.”

The sanctuary’s live-bottom reef is connected to the tidal marshes of our coasts and rivers in Georgia. The reef was discovered in modern times by Milton “Sam” Gray, the sanctuary’s namesake, in the 1960s. The sanctuary has since become a popular spot for recreational boating, fishing, and diving.

“This is the first time this type of exhibit is displayed, sharing only a glimpse of the magnificent story of Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary for library patrons,” says Stan Rogers, Superintendent of Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary. “Guests can get the full glimpse at the Gray's Reef Ocean Discovery Center in downtown Savannah, or tell their own stories about Gray's Reef by volunteering with the sanctuary.”

Gray’s Reef staff will present a special program on Thursday, May 4, 2023 at 11:00am at Oglethorpe Mall Library. A Deep Dive into Gray’s Reef: History and Habitat will explore more connections between the sanctuary and our oceans and coasts.

The History of Gray’s Reef exhibit is free and open to the public. The display will be on view at Oglethorpe Mall Library through May 22, 2023.
