Local Women In Construction To Host Luana Graves Sellars

Staff Report

Tuesday, May 23rd, 2023

On May 23, 2023 the local women in construction organization (NAWIC #380) will host Luana Graves Sellars, founder of Lowcountry Gullah at Pin Point Heritage Museum in honor of historic preservation month. Sellars will be sharing the history of our area in a very historic place from 11:30am until 1pm, with tours of the historic grounds to follow the meeting.

“It is so important that we learn from the past to improve the future. In African tradition, it is expected that one not only speaks in their voice, but also in the voice of the ancestors. So much history, especially Black & Gullah history has been hidden from textbooks. People are starving for historic information, as well as a genealogic connection to their heritage on a local and global level. For the Black community, especially, having a tangible connection to the Gullah culture provides a priceless sense of identity. In a time where ancestry research and identifying one’s “self” is a significant part of our society, it is the perfect time to promote the Gullah culture and its relevance to our society to a broader audience.”  - Luana Graves Sellars

Since its public launch on July 10, 2019, Lowcountry Gullah received attention from an audience that’s local, national and more than 10 countries worldwide and NAWIC #380 is honored to bring such knowledge and expertise to our community in Savannah.
