The City of Port Wentworth announces another historic development to benefit Port Wentworth residents as the council approves significant Chatham Area Transit (CAT) services to begin in March 2024. This expansion of CAT services includes two fixed-route buses, every day of the week on a sixty-minute frequency, as well as thirteen new ADA accessible bus shelters.
“This is another first for Port Wentworth, CAT services have never before been available in Port Wentworth and this commitment is vital to provide connectivity for all residents as our city continues to grow,” said Mayor Pro Tem, Thomas Barbee. City Manager, Steve Davis agreed with these comments and added, “Port Wentworth is an increasingly attractive place for people to live, work and thrive so public transit options need to be integrated into our sustainable growth solutions”.
Port Wentworth and the greater Savannah region are already experiencing exceptional growth, and this will continue with the building of the new Hyundai META Plant in Bryan County. Currently 25,000 vehicles are traveling daily along State Route 21 and State Route 30, in Port Wentworth so the new CAT services will enhance quality of life for everyone. New business and leisure facilities such as the training facility for professional minor league hockey team, Ghost Pirates will benefit from public transport options. The city is planning for the future with transportation in place to handle new infrastructure and exciting initiatives such as the planned new amphitheater.
“The expansion in Port Wentworth is the result of great partnerships as CAT continues to commit to serving the growing transportation needs of Chatham County,” said Executive Director and CEO Faye DiMassimo. “We look forward to welcoming Port Wentworth residents and commuters as we connect them to essential job opportunities, medical appointments, and activities.”
