Humane Society for Greater Savannah’s Pet Fix Celebrates 50,000 Spay and Neuter Surgeries

The Humane Society for Greater Savannah (HSGS) recently celebrated the completion of 50,000 spay and neuter surgeries at their Pet Fix Savannah clinic. Pet Fix Savannah opened in February of 2016 and now averages nearly 9,000 surgeries per year. The milestone represents the efficiency of the Pet Fix staff and the community-wide effort that is required to reduce the number of pets without homes in the Savannah area.
“The mission of the Humane Society for Greater Savannah is to better the lives of pets and people, and one way we can do that is by providing low-cost, high-quality spay and neuter surgeries through our Pet Fix clinic,” said HSGS Executive Director Sean Griffin. “Every year over 6,000 animals end up in the care of shelters and rescues in Chatham County. Spaying and neutering your pet has benefits for their health and behavior, but it also reduces the intake at our shelters and rescues and allows us more time to find new homes for animals already in our care.”
Pet Fix offers an array of pet healthcare services at a reduced cost while ensuring the highest level of care. The clinic is open to the public and offers vaccines, testing, flea/tick medication, heartworm preventatives, spay/neuter and Trap Neuter Vaccinate Return (TNVR) services for community cats. Voucher programs and financial assistance are available
HSGS and Pet Fix Savannah’s TNVR program has reduced cat euthanasia at County shelters by 86% since the program started in 2020.
“For decades, community cats were trapped and brought to Animal Control facilities and humanely euthanized,” said Griffin. “This causes a vacuum effect, and those cats are quickly replaced by other unaltered cats that reproduce at high rates. By returning fixed cats to their colonies, TNVR programs allow caregivers to keep the population at a manageable size. Last year, Pet Fix Savannah’s veterinarians performed 2,210 TNVR surgeries. This year, the program has expanded to other counties and the number of surgeries has already been surpassed.”
