Savannah Sees Marginal Increase in October Unemployment

Monday, November 27th, 2023

Georgia Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson said Thursday that Savannah recorded an unemployment rate of 3.1 percent in October, up one-tenth of a percent over the month. A year ago, the rate was 2.9 percent.

“Georgia's unemployment rate remains below the national average, but businesses face growing pressure, including finding and retaining top-tier talent,” said Commissioner Bruce Thompson. “As we attract diverse companies across the state, we must remain focused on developing the skills needed to meet critical workforce demands without reallocating talent between industries. By prioritizing our labor force, we can further strengthen Georgia as a place where both businesses and individuals can thrive together.”

The labor force decreased in Savannah by 1,576 and ended the month with 199,747. That number went up by 1,948 when compared to October of 2022.

Savannah finished the month with 193,543 employed residents. That number decreased by 1,718 over-the-month and rose by 1,525 when compared to the same time a year ago.

Savannah ended October with 203,500 jobs. That number was unchanged from the previous month and rose by 2,200 when compared to this time last year.

In October, initial unemployment claims increased by 39 (7%) in Savannah. When you compare October 2023 claims to October 2022, claims were up by 105 (23%).
