Tybee Island Maritime Academy (TIMA) has invested substantial time and resources in crafting and implementing its data-centric, cross-curricular education approach, specifically designed to equip students with skills that transcend the confines of traditional classrooms. Leading this data science integration is TIMA’s data science teacher, Kaleena Jedinak, who also serves as a Society for Science Advocate. These events challenge students to delve into authentic scientific datasets, harness their creativity to artistically convey their findings to peers and educators, and in the process, kindle a genuine passion for data analysis. In support of the data science program, TIMA's research classrooms are equipped with state-of-the-art "Pocket Lab" sensors. These cutting-edge sensors empower students to collect and analyze real-world data, fostering a deeper understanding of scientific concepts. The seamless integration of these sensors into the curriculum equips students with practical skills that extend beyond the classroom, finding application in various STEM fields and beyond.
