Creative Coast’s Girls Code Savannah Winter Camp Returns Dec. 18th-22nd, 2023

Friday, December 15th, 2023

The Creative Coast has announced its 2023 Girls Code Savannah Winter Camp. Girls Code Savannah is a free youth coding program for 5th to 8th-grade girls attending Savannah Chatham County Public Schools. This year’s Winter Camp will occur from December 18th to December 22nd from 9 am to 2 pm daily. The Creative Coast is partnering with the Georgia Southern University Business Innovation Group (BIG) to host the camp at the Georgia Southern Armstrong campus.

Activities focus on combining creativity and computer science to create an engaging experience for campers. At this camp, girls will learn to code or continue to advance the coding of their websites. Winter Camp 2023 will run two parallel coding labs - one for website coding beginners and another for returning website coders. For those new to website coding, the beginner‐level coding lab will teach an introduction to the HTML and CSS coding languages. A simultaneous second coding lab will introduce returning coders to the JavaScript and Python programming languages as they code their current websites to be more dynamic and interactive. Additionally, free lunch and snacks will be provided each day.

The Girls Code Savannah Program Coordinator, Lesli Ott, is an experienced full-stack software developer and data scientist who leads curriculum development. She serves as a lead instructor for Girls Code Savannah camps and classes and a teaching mentor for several female high school and college students assisting with the program. The high school and college students, in turn, also lead instruction as paid teaching assistants. As Girls Code Savannah participants move from middle to high school, they can also grow into teaching assistant positions.

With guidance and mentorship from experienced developers and teachers, Girls Code Savannah attendees have the opportunity to learn to code in a supportive, fun, and friendly environment. The overall mission of Girls Code Savannah is to inspire girls in the Savannah community to continue to advance their technology and coding education and to consider the many benefits of pursuing high-impact and high-income STEM-based careers.

Girls Code is made possible by generous sponsors at the City of Savannah, Howmet Aerospace and the Howment Women's Network, and the Georgia Southern University Business Innovation Group.

Girls Code Savannah is designed for young women in 5th ‐ 8th grade within the Savannah Chatham County Public School System, homeschool students included. However, we welcome all genders to attend our girl-focused camps and classes. Attendees must register to attend, as seats are limited. This camp fills up quickly, so we encourage early sign-ups to ensure a spot! For more information and to register, please visit girlscodesavannah.org/upcoming-classes.
