Telfair Museums will host the opening celebration for the new Making Marks community art exhibition from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 10. This event, which is free and open to the public, will take place in the Neises Auditorium located within the Jepson Center at 207 W. York Street.

Inspired by the exhibition Created Beasts: Sculpture by Ulysses Davis, Making Marks features works submitted by nearly 300 local residents of all ages and backgrounds emphasizing the healing and transformative power of art making. The opening program will include a presentation of Telfair’s outreach programming and participant speakers from a range of partner organizations which serve the community.  Powerful feedback from participants reflects the positive feelings of accomplishment and healthy emotional responses experienced. Participant organizations include patients at a range of physical and mental healthcare facilities, schools and youth organizations, as well as detainees from the Chatham County Sherriff Office.

Harry DeLorme, Director of Education and Senior Curator, for the Making Marks program said, “It’s wonderful to see how the fantastic creations of Ulysses Davis have inspired participants across our community. We can’t wait for visitors to experience this joyful celebration of creativity by individuals who participated in Telfair Museums’ outreach programs this fall.”  

Telfair Museums’ mission is to develop awareness, understanding, and appreciation of the arts and serves as a dynamic cultural center connecting people of all ages and backgrounds. Making Marks is a long-running community exhibition which demonstrates participation from a diverse range of community members in line with the nonprofit organization’s goals.

When creating together, growth, support, discovery, and empowerment are just a few key aspects of the individual experience,” said Rachel Stayer, Outreach Coordinator. “When someone is faced with a creative challenge and is given the freedom and support to make their own decisions, the end result radiates strength and pride. This is why making art is so important, because it makes people believe in themselves and their capabilities. It’s powerful, and that’s what Making Marks is about.”
