City of Port Wentworth Awarded Clean Financial Audit

Thursday, February 1st, 2024

The City of Port Wentworth has been awarded a clean financial audit from independent CPA certified auditors, Mauldin & Jenkins  (M & J) for the second consecutive year. This is significant as it is the highest level of assurance an organization can be awarded for their financial statements, indicating that no issues were identified and that internal financial controls are working effectively.

“This is great news as it demonstrates our commitment to consistently implementing ethical and transparent financial processes over the 23 months the new administration for the City of Port Wentworth has been in place,” said Steve Davis, City Manager. “Under the management of our Chief Financial Officer, Thomas Kilmartin, and his team, we are confident in our financial processes as we invest taxpayer dollars into improving the quality of life for all residents.”

The City of Port Wentworth worked with the Georgia office of national independent CPA firm M&J, which is recognized annually as a Top 100 Accounting Firm by both Accounting Today and Inside Public Accounting. M&J’s clean audit of the City of Port Wentworth evaluated the  implementation of Generally Accepted Auditing Standards and Governmental Auditing Standards in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Their process included reviewing compliance controls and Government-wide financial statements concluding that the City of Port Wentworth is in a strong liquid financial position. M&J noted that the City’s Annual Comprehensive Financial Report, which is submitted annually to the Government Finance Officers Association, goes above and beyond basic reporting requirements.
