Savannah Technical College was recognized for excellence at the Georgia 2024 SkillsUSA Post-secondary State Conference. Students won medals in 13 competitions: nine gold, five silver, and two bronze. SkillsUSA is a national career and technical student organization/competition that annually serves more than 380,000 high school, college and post-secondary students–and their instructors–in technical, skilled and service-occupation instructional programs.

The College also earned a Quality Chapter award, Chapter of Excellence – Silver Level Award, first place in greatest percentage increase in membership, and second place in overall membership.

STC Business Management graduate and current Marketing Management student Corina Stewart was elected as a state officer. Her role will be determined at a leadership workshop later this spring. She is a member of the gold-medal Community Service teams (2023, 2024). She is the president of STC’s SkillsUSA chapter, the Business Professionals of America chapter, and STC’s Student Government Association (2022-23). She is also the PR officer of Phi Theta Kappa and a member of National Technical Honor Society.

More than 45 students participated in more than 20 competitions. Nine individuals/teams won gold and will compete in the national SkillsUSA leadership and skills competition in Atlanta this June:

  • The Community Service team won gold for the fourth year in a row with teammates: Corina Stewart, Bazhena Kolesova, and Keelie Drabb;

  • The Occupational Health and Safety (OSHA) team won gold for the fourth year in a row with Industrial Maintenance Systems students Aiden Cimadevilla, Scott Szurley, Steven Cowart, and William Smith;

  • The Promotional Bulletin Board team won gold for the third year in a row with Early Childhood Care & Education teammates: Jeannie Fleming (alternate), Janine Lowry, Angel, and Debra Perez;

  • Air Conditioning student Marco Viera won gold for the Sheet Metal competition;

  • Architectural Drafting student Paul Panas won gold for Architectural Drafting;

  • Automotive student Ricky Blount won gold for Mobile Electronics;

  • Barbering student Alex Rodriguez won gold for Barbering;

  • Early Childhood Care & Education student Jeri Newsome won gold for Customer Service; and

  • Savannah Film Academy students Robert Ellis, III and Phil Marnell won gold for the Digital Cinema competition.

STC teams/ individuals won silver medals in five competitions:

  • Air Conditioning student Bryan Cortes won silver for HVAC;

  • Air Conditioning Student Ronnie Windham won silver in the Sheet Metal competition;

  • Air Conditioning students Larry Williams, Tjamal Williams, Lawrence McKnight, Rasheed Knowles, and Christian Martinez won silver in the Quiz Bowl competition;

  • Automotive student Demirtrius Bryant won silver for Mobile Electronics; and

  • Culinary Arts student Sohan Bolle won silver with the Culinary Arts competition;

 

Two teams or individuals won bronze:

  • Air Conditioning student Mason Neilson won bronze for Sheet Metal; and
  • Savannah Film Academy students Ryleigh Sandefur and Roby Neidlinger won bronze for TV Production.
