The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) returned to Savannah State University (SSU) last week bringing athletic teams and their fans from 15 regional colleges and universities to compete against each other and to visit the hostess city.
The tournament concluded with the championship at Enmarket Arena on Sunday afternoon. Clark Atlanta won for the men’s team 65-55 over Miles College, while the Miles women’s team defeated Kentucky State 75-72.
SSU Interim President Cynthia Alexander said she was pleased that the SIAC chose SSU to host its basketball championship tournament for the second year in a row.
“As the first public historically black university in Georgia we were proud to welcome the other HBCUs in our conference to join us on our historic campus and to visit our fine city,” Alexander said. “We have enjoyed watching the fierce competition between these outstanding athletes in the Tiger Arena, but, even more importantly, we have enjoyed watching our students engage and interact with these students off the court.”
The tournament, presented by Cricket Wireless, included teams from Albany State University, Allen University, Benedict College, Central State University, Clark Atlanta University, Edward Waters University, Fort Valley State University, Kentucky State University, Lane College, LeMoyne-Owen College, Miles College, Morehouse College, Savannah State University, Spring Hill College, and Tuskegee University), which are located within a contiguous seven-state footprint (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Ohio, South Carolina, and Tennessee).
