Coastal Heritage Society (CHS) received $15,000 from
Americana Corner’s Preserving America Grant program to support the conservation and
display of one of the nineteen cannons recovered from the Savannah River in 2021. This
discovery was made near the CHS historic site, Old Fort Jackson, during the Savannah Harbor
Expansion Project. The cannons and dozens of related artifacts are believed to be relics of the
1779 Siege of Savannah during the American Revolution. This important discovery helps the
nonprofit organization tell the larger history of Savannah's important role in America's fight for
freedom. Once these treasures are conserved, they will be displayed in a new core exhibition
at Savannah History Museum called “Loyalists & Liberty: Savannah in the American
Revolution.” In addition to Savannah History Museum and Old Fort Jackson, CHS operates
Savannah Children’s Museum, Georgia State Railroad Museum, Harper Fowlkes House, and
Pin Point Heritage Museum.

Americana Corner was founded in 2020 to share informative stories of momentous events,
significant documents, and influential leaders that helped create and shape the USA. The
organization’s passion to tell the Great American Story extends to conserving its cultural and
historical treasures through the Preserving America Grant Program, which supports diverse
projects across the nation that contribute to sharing the rich tapestry of early American history.

"We are grateful for Americana Corner's generous support of our ‘Loyalists & Liberty’ project,”
said Catherine Duffy, Chief Curator of Coastal Heritage Society. “Their support to conserve the
cannon helps us save this collection of rare treasures. Keeping them together as a complete
collection is critical to interpreting our understanding of how Georgia shaped the outcome of
the Revolutionary War."
