Greenbriar Children’s Center, a non-profit with 75 years of experience helping children and families in Chatham County, has announced “A Walk of Community”, to be held on Saturday, July 13, at 7:30 a.m, beginning at First African Baptist Church, 23 Montgomery Street in Savannah, Ga and concluding at Greenbriar’s main campus at 3709 Hopkins Street in Savannah.
“We are excited to invite our community to join us to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the founding of Greenbriar, along with our founders-leaders of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Gamma Sigma Omega Chapter and First African Baptist Church,” said Gena P. Taylor, Executive Director of Greenbriar Children’s Center.
The Walk will begin at 7:30 am, with members of the community gathering beginning at 6:30 am. The three-mile walk will then continue to Greenbriar, signifying the journey of Greenbriar’s founders over 75 years ago. Walkers are encouraged to register online at www.greenbriarchildrenscenter.org.
“Greenbriar was founded as an orphanage for black children at a time in our history when there were no options for black children who had no one to care for them” added Miss Taylor. “Young women from the Alpha Kappa Alpha, Gamma Sigma Omega Chapter, worked with the Reverend Ralph Mark Gilbert of First African Baptist Church, along with other local church leaders, to find funding to help create this institution. This walk represents their journey of faith to create a place where all children could feel safe and be cared for.”
