Mayor Van R. Johnson, II joined 46 mayors in a nationwide challenge to raise awareness about the role of social connection in promoting mental and physical health.
The completion of the challenge, held during Mental Health Awareness Month in May, signifies Savannah’s commitment to enhancing social connections, increasing physical activity, and improving mental health in the community.
In total, 47 cities participated, hosting over 100 healthy lifestyle events during the challenge, developed by the National Forum for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention (National Forum), in partnership with the American Public Health Association, and the Centers for Disease Control and Stroke Prevention.
“Participating in the Move with the Mayor Spring Challenge has been a fantastic way for the Savannah community to unite, get moving, and support one another,” Mayor Johnson said. “We are proud to be part of this national initiative and excited to continue promoting healthy lifestyles across our City.”
John M. Clymer, executive director of the National Forum, said the nonprofit is proud to see so many mayors actively engaging in MWTM and looks forward to improving future programming based on the cities’ successes.
“The success of the Move with the Mayor® Spring Challenge in Savannah exemplifies the positive impact that coordinated community efforts can have on public health,” Clymer said. “By bringing attention to the importance of social connection and physical activity on mental health, cities like Savannah are leading the way in creating healthier, happier communities.”
