Groves High School Financial Services Pathway teacher Sterling L. Guess, Sr., recently presented at the prestigious National Conference of the Council for Economic Education in Cleveland, Ohio, on September 27, 2024. His presentation, titled “The Impact of Redlining and Segregation on the Black Community,” explored the historical and economic consequences of discriminatory practices on Black communities na During his presentation, Guess discussed how redlining and segregation systematically restricted economic opportunities for Black Americans, leading to enduring financial disparities, reduced access to homeownership, and long-term wealth gaps. He also emphasized how these systemic inequalities continue to affect Black communities today and the critical role financial literacy education plays in empowering individuals to overcome these obstacles.
The National Conference of the Council for Economic Education serves as a key platform for educators and policymakers to address crucial issues in economic and financial education. Guess’s presentation drew attention to the importance of understanding the legacy of economic injustice and the need for comprehensive financial education to support marginalized communities.
We commend teacher Sterling L. Guess, Sr. for his impactful presentation and his ongoing dedication to financial education and social justice.
