Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Thursday, October 3rd, 2024

Savannah Classical Academy (SCA) is the first and only public school in Chatham County to have reopened to all students on Monday, Sept. 30. SCA was closed for only one full day as well as implementing early closing on Thursday, Sept. 26 in anticipation of Hurricane Helene which caused extensive damage throughout the region.

“We know how families are struggling to get back to normal right now after the devastation caused by the storm,” said SCA CEO Barry Lollis. “SCA always puts the welfare of our students first and as we have power and our facilities are safe, we wanted to reopen as soon as possible. It is important that we give families a safe location for their children and relief for adults that have to go to work as well as overcome any disruptions or damage the hurricane may have caused them. We are committed to ensuring our students are supported and continue to receive high quality instruction and know that our families are pleased that their children could resume their schooling so quickly.”

SCA is a K-12 charter school which is open to all students residing in Chatham County, is funded by the public education system but retains a charter that allows it to operate autonomously under a board of parents and community members.
