Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Wednesday, November 13th, 2024

Chatham Savannah Authority for the Homeless (CSAH), in partnership with Chatham County, will showcase their new Project Hope Water mobile shower unit on November 18th at 2pm at Kingdom Life Christian Fellowship, located at 425 W Montgomery Cross Road. The goal of the mobile shower unit is to provide access to regular, safe, clean shower facilities for people experiencing housing instability in the Chatham-Savannah community while connecting them with vital resources and pathways to housing opportunities. With the support of the Chatham County Board of Commissioners, this project is funded through the Chatham County Recovery Funds/American Rescue Act.

“A shower, when paired with, what we call—radical hospitality—can be powerful in helping restore hope, dignity, and opportunity for this community of people. Showers won’t solve homelessness, but they can be a first step toward helping people feel like themselves again giving them renewed confidence and empowering them to seek the services they need,” says Jennifer Dulong, CEO of CSAH.

Once the program is fully operational, the mobile shower unit will rotate between key locations each week providing services to clients throughout Chatham County. CSAH, in collaboration with several community partners, has worked to identify areas in our community where people experiencing homelessness have difficulty accessing clean water and shower facilities. Kingdom Life Christian Fellowship, a vital partner in this new CSAH outreach program, will be a weekly location for Project Hope Water. The mobile shower unit will change locations daily. CSAH case management team members, medical and behavioral health partners, legal services, pet services, and more will be offered on-site during regular hours of operation (Monday through Thursday from 10:00 AM until 3:00 PM).

Project Hope Water is CSAH’s latest street outreach initiative. Other ongoing initiatives include the City of Savannah-funded Homeless Outreach Team (H.O.T.), Georgia Department of Behavioral-Health-funded Projects for Assistance in Transition from Homelessness (P.A.T.H.), and the coordination of inclement weather resources, communication, and transportation. The organization’s street outreach teams connect unsheltered community members to critical services. Through nonjudgmental conversations, motivational interviewing, and consistent engagements, their outreach teams build strong relationships and rapport with the ultimate goal of helping people experiencing homelessness transition from the streets to housing stability.
