Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Monday, December 16th, 2024

The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) donated over 400 gifts to Union Mission today and created a joyful Christmas experience to make the holidays brighter for  local children and their families.  SCAD students, faculty, and staff purchased  clothing, toys, books, electronics, bicycles, and much more to fulfill dozens of wish lists.

This annual event is part of the university’s SCAD SERVE  initiative that empowers students, faculty, and staff to make meaningful contributions through intentional initiatives that improve quality of life for our communities.

“For a trio of glittering decades, SCAD and Union Mission have joined hearts and hands to share the spirit of the season with our Savannah neighbors,” said SCAD president and founder Paula Wallace.  “What began in 1994 as a humble holiday partnership has blossomed into a bounty of care and compassion, with SCAD faculty and staff once again filling Union Mission's halls with presents and possibilities for our hometown. As we mark this 30th anniversary of bringing holiday magic to local families, I'm reminded that hope is the most precious gift of all. Here's to 30 more years of good tidings to all!”

Every year SCAD elves decorate a room at Union Mission for the parents to come and pick up the toys and other gifts for their children to receive on Christmas. This year’s SCAD created a gingerbread theme - the cheerful holiday decorations include gingerbread men and gingerbread houses along with many Christmas trees, garland, and other festive displays.

“The holiday spirit and joy provided by the Savannah College of Art and Design and SCAD SERVE through its annual gift donation drive for Union Mission’s children and families brings tremendous delight and helps to meet the needs of our neighbors during this time of gratitude,” said Union Mission President and CEO Michael Traynor.  “For 30 years, SCAD has been the pearl of Union Mission’s holiday season as the drive is filled with compassion, hope, and impact. We are beyond thankful for such an incredible partnership with SCAD and look forward to working together in the years to come.”
