SING Celebrates Astounding Launch with 50 Young Voices
Friday, December 20th, 2024
Savannah’s newest children’s choir, SING: Savannah Inspiring the Next Generation, has made an inspiring debut, welcoming 50 young singers in third – eighth grade to its inaugural season. Built on the belief that every child deserves access to a high-quality choral experience regardless of financial circumstances, SING is already making a difference in the community.
Founded by a dedicated team of local performing arts leaders, including Artistic Director Rebecca Flaherty, Co-Director and Collaborative Pianist Ray Ellis, Choreographer Cheri Hester, and Administrative Director Randy Canady, SING has created a welcoming and enriching space for Savannah’s young musicians.
A Dream Realized
“When we launched, we weren’t sure how many singers would show up, or if there would be any interest at all,” said Rebecca Flaherty. “But at our first rehearsal, 52 children filled the room with song. We grew much more quickly than we imagined!”
The choir has found a perfect home at Asbury Memorial Church, renowned for its vibrant arts community. “When I suggested a community children’s choir to the leadership at Asbury, their enthusiasm was overwhelming,” Flaherty shared. “They host our Monday evening rehearsals, sponsor and host our retreats, and are truly invested in our success. This support lets me focus on what I love most: making music with kids.”
A Season of Accessibility and Growth
True to its mission of inclusivity, SING’s inaugural season is a “Donate-what-you-can” affair. Families are encouraged to contribute $50 for the season, but no child is turned away for financial reasons. “I am amazed at the number of folks who have stepped up to help by donating their time, money, or services,” Flaherty added.
