The Georgia Association of Metropolitan Planning

Organizations (GAMPO) has elected Melanie Wilson, Executive

Director and CEO of the Chatham County-Savannah Metropolitan

Planning Commission (MPC), as its Vice President—a role that will

amplify Savannah’s voice in state-level transportation and urban

planning decisions.

With a distinguished career spanning over 30 years in urban and

regional planning, Wilson has been a leading advocate for smart

growth and community engagement. Before joining the MPC, she

held leadership positions in planning departments across the

Southeast, shaping policies that have driven responsible

development and equitable infrastructure improvements. Under her leadership, the Chatham

County-Savannah MPC has expanded its efforts in transit planning, historic preservation, and

public engagement, reinforcing its role as a key driver of regional progress.

“I am honored to serve as Vice President of GAMPO and to collaborate with planning leaders

across Georgia to advance policies that foster sustainable and inclusive growth,” said Wilson.

“This role allows me to advocate for the unique needs of Savannah and Chatham County on a

larger stage, ensuring that our region remains at the forefront of smart planning and infrastructure

investments.”

GAMPO is a coalition of Georgia’s Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs), working to

coordinate statewide transportation initiatives, advocate for funding, and shape policies that

impact growing metro areas. As Vice President, Wilson will help set the organization’s strategic

priorities, collaborate with state and local agencies, and champion innovative solutions to improve

mobility, infrastructure, and sustainability.
