"First Brush" Ceremony at Live Oak Public Libraries: Port City
Friday, February 28th, 2025
Live Oak Public Libraries invites the community to join us in painting the first brush strokes as we launch a mural project to beautify the exterior of the Port City Library.
Over the next three months, local artist, Chelsea Wahman, will be creating the large-scale outdoor mural with the help of patrons and student volunteers. Special programming, inspired by the mural project, will be free and open to the public throughout the project at Port City Library.
The public is invited to vote now for their preferred concept for the mural at VOTE HERE! or in person at the Port City Library during regular operating hours. The six concepts in development incorporate themes of literacy, wellness and local iconography.
First Brush is scheduled for 11 AM at the Port City Library, 3501 Houlihan St., Savannah, GA 41408. Expect activities, snacks and information about the project and all the library has to offer. No rain date is scheduled. Volunteers who want to help complete the mural are welcomed.
The finished mural will be unveiled to the public at Port City's Summer Reading Challenge kickoff party, scheduled for Saturday, June 7th.
"We are so excited to launch this amazing project, thanks to the creativity of Chelsea and the financial support of an ACTion Project Grant from the City of Savannah Economic Development Department," said Lola DeWitt, Executive Director of Live Oak Public Libraries.
"The Port City Library was built in 1981 and the city has grown all around it, " she continued. "It can be easy to miss. With this project, we'll be making sure the Port City Library remains a visible and welcoming part of the community."
