Telfair Museums presents ‘Thresholds of Perception,’ a solo exhibition showcasing iconic digital art by Jim Campbell, now on view through April 6 at the Jepson Center, located at 207 W York Street in Savannah. Well-known for his groundbreaking light-based structures, Campbell’s work pushes the boundaries of human perception by transforming arrays of LEDs into evocative, low-resolution moving images.
‘Thresholds of Perception’ spans more than 20 years of Campbell’s career, featuring a range of examples of his low-resolution works. Through captivating images, viewers are invited to engage in the fundamental act of seeing and recognizing. Campbell’s work blends physical materiality with humanizing elements in the digital realm. One of the featured art pieces, ‘Color Home Movies,’ uses found footage from anonymous home movies. The footage is reduced to animated pixels of light, requiring the viewer’s memory and imagination to fill in the gaps. Similarly, the ‘Motion and Rest’ series reveals the recognition of movement through subtle shifts in light and form, using the example of someone walking. ‘Eroding Waves’ is one of Campbell’s major works with 3,456 LED lights that extend into three-dimensional particles, creating an illusion of swimmers in a sculptural wave.
Campbell’s art has been featured in exhibitions across the United States and abroad, with representation in major collections including the Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and others. His public art works include ‘Day for Night’ (2018), a permanent moving image installation displayed across the top nine floors of Salesforce Tower in San Francisco. Campbell holds two Bachelor of Science degrees in electrical engineering and mathematics from MIT, in addition to patents for work in the development of high-definition video.
This exhibition is organized by Telfair Museums and curated by Harry DeLorme, director of education and senior curator.
“Telfair Museums is honored to present Jim Cambell’s work,” said Delorme. “This exhibition is a journey into the art of seeing, exploring how we perceive and interpret the world around us. We invite the community to join us for this exciting exhibition.”
