City of Port Wentworth Hosts Ribbon Cutting for New Community Basketball Court

Today the City of Port Wentworth and the Parks and Recreation Department celebrated the ribbon cutting for the new basketball court at Della M. Steele Park, located at 7 Newport Boulevard in Port Wentworth. Councilman Rufus Bright for District 3, in which the new court is located, led the devotion and pledge, Director of Parks and Recreation Tiffany Lancaster welcomed attendees and Mayor Gary Norton made opening remarks. Mayor Pro Tem Gabrielle Nelson and City Manager Steve Davis made presentations and were joined by council members Thomas Barbee, Artlise Alston-Cone, Mark Stephens, and Shawn Randerwala. Also in attendance were Della M. Steele’s sons, Glenn and Anthony Steele.

“We are thrilled to open this new basketball court at Della M. Steele Park, a place where community members of all ages can come together to enjoy the game, foster friendships, and build a stronger, healthier neighborhood,” said Tiffany Lancaster, Director of Parks and Recreation. “This court represents more than just a place to play basketball. It is a symbol of our commitment to providing accessible recreational opportunities for all our residents, fostering community spirit, and promoting healthy, active lifestyles.”

Della M. Steele Park is located at the entrance to Newport Subdivision off Highway 30. This state-of-the-art basketball court also offers four square, hopscotch and pickleball lines for transportable pickleball net and paddles.  For residents’ convenience, it features a covered pavilion and two playgrounds. One playground is for children between the ages of two and five years old, and the other for ages five to twelve years. 

The City of Port Wentworth Parks and Recreation Department is dedicated to offering residents quality and safe recreational programs and services that lends itself to team building, enriching people’s lives and contributing to the total development of families and the city. The diverse year-round programming, for all ages, focuses on overall health and well-being of residents.
