Bethesda Academy Celebrates 285 Years of Impact
Monday, April 28th, 2025
Bethesda Academy, the nation’s oldest childcare organization and a Savannah institution for educational excellence, commemorated its 285th anniversary with a successful weekend of events April 25-26 on its historic campus.
The celebration, marking nearly three centuries of the school’s legacy, brought together alumni, students, families, and community members to honor the academy’s past and future. The two-day event highlighted Bethesda’s enduring mission and strong community spirit.
The festivities began Friday, April 25, with an alumni reception featuring food, music, and opportunities for graduates to reconnect. The following day, Saturday, April 26, the academy held an alumni reunion, awards ceremony, and corn hole tournament, welcoming many alumni back to the school.
During the awards ceremony, Colt Tootle received the George K. Gannam American Legion Post #184 Award, recognizing a student who demonstrates Americanism and a love of God and country. Zavier Dorsey, a rising senior, was awarded the full-tuition Palermo Award in recognition of his good character, academic effort, and leadership ability. Additionally, the full-tuition Syd Williams Award was presented to Raleigh Wesley, also a rising senior, who best embodies the characteristics of a Bethesda young man.
The weekend concluded with an open house later Saturday, inviting prospective families to explore Bethesda Academy’s tradition of boys’ education in Savannah.
“This past weekend perfectly reflected the values we strive to instill in our Bethesda Academy students: education, community, and the strengthening of friendships, both new and old, while deeply respecting our heritage and enthusiastically embracing the future,” said Bethesda Academy President Dr. Chris Proctor.
Alumni attendance at the reunion and reception was strong, with many expressing gratitude for the school’s lasting impact on their lives. Saturday’s open house provided insight into Bethesda’s future, attracting families interested in its educational approach. The timing coincided with the Georgia Promise Scholarship, a state program offering up to $6,500 annually, tax-free, for eligible K-12 students attending private schools.
Founded in 1740 as an orphanage, Bethesda Academy has evolved into a leading private day school for boys. The anniversary events underscored its long history of education and character development, while also highlighting its commitment to health, recreation, and community involvement.
“We were thrilled to celebrate 285 years of positively shaping the lives of countless boys and young men in Savannah,” said Bethesda Academy Chaplain and Athletic Director Antwain Turner. “This significant milestone rekindled cherished memories and strengthened bonds within our community, powerfully showcasing Bethesda’s enduring impact on the lives of our students. I'm already looking forward to our 300th anniversary.”
