The Savannah Council on World Affairs presents:
Thursday, April 17, 2025, 7:30pm, at the Coastal Georgia Center (305 Fahm Street),
Peter E. Harrell, Fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, former Senior Director for International Economics at the National Security Council and the National Economic Council at the White House, an attorney in private practice and former Adjunct Senior Fellow at the Center for a New American Security will present
"Trade Wars: What's Going On, What is the U.S. Trying to Achieve, and How is This Going to Play Out?"
During the first months of its second term, the Trump Administration has upended the global trading order, imposing new tariffs on China, Canada, and Mexico; proposing "reciprocal" tariffs on trading partners as diverse as India and European nations; and imposing tariffs on cars and steel to promote U.S manufacturing. Foreign governments, meanwhile, are using a mix of diplomacy and retaliation to try to mitigate the impact of the tariffs. Come join the Savannah Council on World Affairs as it hosts Peter Harrell, one of the most authoritative experts in Washington on trade and international sanctions, to offer his analysis of these fast-breaking issues. Peter is a Non Resident fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and a former White House economic official. Mr. Harrell will unpack the Trump Administration's objectives, what the recent actions mean for you, the consumer, and for industry, and how trade negotiations may play out over the next year. Peter can also answer your questions about how effective U.S. sanctions are on Russia regarding the Ukraine war, and how effective sanctions are as a diplomatic tool in general.
