Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Friday, June 20th, 2025

On Thursday, June 12, 2025, Mayor Van R. Johnson II issued a proclamation declaring June 16–20, 2025, and every subsequent third week in June, as National Waste & Recycling Workers Week in the City of Savannah.

The City of Savannah is proud to join the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) Georgia Chapter in celebrating 2025 Waste & Recycling Workers Week. This year’s theme is ELEVATE: History. Individual. Profession.

Participation in Waste & Recycling Workers Week underscores the City’s commitment to recognizing the essential contributions of solid waste management workers and thanking them for keeping Savannah safe, clean, and healthy.

“These are the solid waste professionals who ensure our communities remain clean and thrive for future generations. Your efforts make a difference—you are not just solid waste professionals, but also guardians of our environment. We are truly grateful for all that you do,” said Quhannah Andrews, Senior Director, Solid Waste, addressing members of the Sanitation Department during Thursday’s City Council meeting.

Throughout the week, the City of Savannah will highlight solid waste and recycling workers on its website (savannahga.gov) and social media platforms. This initiative, in partnership with the SWANA Georgia Chapter, aims to raise awareness about the vital work these employees perform every day to protect public health and the environment.
