The Current GA has been recognized in the 75th Annual Green Eyeshade Awards, which honor excellence in journalism across the southeastern United States.
The newsroom’s investigative series, "Fast-Tracking Injustice"— reported by Caitlin Philippo, Maggie Lee, Margaret Coker & Jake Shore — received awards in three categories:
- Second Place – Courts, Crime & Law Reporting
- Third Place – Data-Driven Reporting
- Third Place – Public Service in Digital Journalism
The Green Eyeshade Awards are administered by the Society of Professional Journalists and include entries from news organizations across 11 southeastern states.
"Being recognized in multiple categories reinforces our focus on accountability reporting that serves the public," said Margaret Coker, editor-in-chief of The Current GA. “We remain committed to producing journalism that tackles complex issues and helps our local communities understand how systems affect their lives.”
The "Fast-Tracking Injustice" series investigated how hundreds of criminal cases tied to a disbanded police narcotics unit in Glynn County were never reviewed, despite a judge’s order, after officers were found guilty of misconduct. The reporting revealed systemic failures by law enforcement, prosecutors, and courts that left many defendants without notice of possible legal relief, even as some officials involved faced criminal charges themselves.
These recognitions serve as a reminder of the importance of nonprofit, nonpartisan journalism in Coastal Georgia. As newsrooms continue to shrink in our region, The Current GA remains dedicated to filling that gap by producing stories that hold power to account and inform the public.
