A Taste of Respect: Chef Mike Hanlon Brings Japanese-Inspired Meals to Savannah’s Older Adults Through SCI’s Meals on Wheels Program
Tuesday, September 2nd, 2025
Today and for the first time ever, older adults receiving Meals on Wheels from Senior Citizens Inc. (SCI) will enjoy dishes inspired by Japanese cuisine — thanks to Chef Mike Hanlon, Executive Chef of Savannah’s celebrated restaurant Ukiyo.
As part of SCI’s ongoing 65th Anniversary Celebration, which brings local renowned chefs into the Meals on Wheels kitchen to create exciting, nutritious meals for homebound older adults, Hanlon is sharing two standout recipes from Ukiyo’s menu:
-
Chicken Kabayaki, a tender grilled chicken glazed with a sweet-savory soy-mirin reduction, and
-
Vanilla Rice Custard, a delicious, nourishing dessert crafted with comfort in mind.
“Japanese cooking is rooted in intention — respect for the ingredients, balance in flavor, and care for the person enjoying the food,” said Chef Hanlon. “Meals on Wheels clients deserve that kind of thoughtfulness, and I’m proud to share something that reflects that philosophy.”
With over 25 years of global kitchen experience, Hanlon drew from the guiding principles of Japanese cuisine: seasonal simplicity, textural harmony, and gratitude for those we serve. These values align perfectly with SCI’s mission to help older adults age successfully with care and respect.
Meals on Wheels provides more than just nourishment. For many clients, it’s their only daily connection to the outside world — a warm meal, a wellness check, and a reminder that they matter. By weaving the artistry of professional chefs into the program, SCI continues to elevate both the flavor and meaning of each meal delivered.
“Mike’s generosity in sharing these recipes truly reflects the spirit of our anniversary celebration,” said Patti Lyons, President of Senior Citizens Inc. “A well-prepared meal can be a moment of joy and respect. And Chef Hanlon’s contributions show just how deeply food can communicate both.”
SCI’s Meals on Wheels program has delivered nearly 7 million meals over the last 65 years. With support from talented chefs like Hanlon, SCI is honoring that legacy by continuing to innovate — and nourish — one meal at a time.
