Living History: From Then Until Now Comes to The Learning Center

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Monday, October 6th, 2025

Senior Citizens, Inc. invites the community to a very special evening at The Learning Center on Thursday, October 9, from 5:30–6:30 p.m., as eight distinguished Savannah natives share their collective history through the powerful new book From Then Until Now: Short Memoirs of Eight African American Savannahians.

From Then Until Now chronicles the experiences of the “Men of a Certain Age” (MOCA)—a group of African American men who grew up under Jim Crow but went on to shape Savannah through education, music, business, public service, and leadership. Their stories capture not only individual triumphs but also the broader legacy of Black Southern resilience and the power of community.

Contributors include:

  • Dr. Otis Johnson — veteran educator, former Savannah mayor, and recipient of SCI’s Legends, Leaders, and Life Well Lived Award

  • Teddy Adams — professional musician and educator

  • Charles E. Day, Sr. — corporate executive and business consultant

  • James Green — educator and coach

  • Lawrence Hutchins, Jr. — band director and music educator

  • Henry “Dicky” Jones — police officer and firefighter

  • Willie Richard Shinhoster — entrepreneur and educator

  • Freddie L. West — civil servant and corporate manager

“From Then Until Now is more than a memoir—it is living history,” said Roger Smith, Director of the Learning Center at Senior Citizens, Inc. “These men’s stories remind us of the challenges they faced and the resilience that carried them forward. We are honored to welcome them to The Learning Center so our community can learn from their experiences, their wisdom, and their example.”
